University of Science and Technology of China, China
Dr.Yanwu Zhu is a professor in Materials Science and Engineering at the Universityof Science and Technology of China (USTC). He received his MS (2003) from Peking University (China) and PhD (2007) from National University of Singapore(NUS), both in physics. He worked as a research fellow in NUS Nanoscience &Nanotechnology Initiative, Singapore before he moved to the University of Texasat Austin, where he joined Prof. Rodney Ruoff’s group for graphene materials studies till July 2011. He has published more than 100 research papers on thetopics of nanomaterials, applied physics and applied chemistry. So far these papers have been cited by about 10000 times and the highest citation is about 2400. His H factor is 38.

Dr. Zhu was awarded the 2005 President's Graduate Fellowship by National University of Singapore, 2006 Chinese Government Award for Outstanding Self-financedStudents Abroad and 2011 Scopus Young Researcher Award. After he joined USTC,Dr. Zhu was selected as the second batch of Young Talent Thousand program by the central government of China and awarded the MOE New Century ExcellentTalents in University and NSFC Young Excellent Young Scientist prizes. His current research interest includes:
1) Synthesis and characterization of graphene and other novel carbon materials;
2) Photoelectric properties of 2D nanomaterials;
3) High performance energy storage materials and devices.

Abstract

2.Two dimensional (2D) materials such as graphene have attracted intensive research interest in energy storage such as supercapacitors or batteries for years. For the practical application of graphene or other 2D materials in energy storage devices, 3D architectures of 2D platelets shall be designed for achieving the comprehensively useful performance of the devices. An approach combining self-assembly and chemical processing has been developed for high volumetric performance of supercapacitor electrodes, high rate Li-ion battery electrodes and novel carbon monoliths with potentially new physical properties. The talk will summarize some recent work of 3D carbon architectures made from carbon quantum dots and graphene materials, with focus on the relationship between structure and performance.
