Abstract

It is a challenge to synthesize graphene-based sponge via a low cost method. Herein, we propose a facile, economic, and environmentally friendly method to produce ultralight graphene sponge consisting of carbon nanofibers (CNF) and nitrogen-doped graphene using raw cotton and urea through a simple thermal condensation method. The pore walls of our sponge consist of graphene tethered to CNF via carbon-carbon bonds, forming the novel “rebar graphene” structure. Owing to the porous, robust and stable structure, our hybrid graphene sponge shows excellent elasticity, electrical conductivity and adsorption capacity, thereby making it a potential material in many fields such as environmental cleanup and as flexible electrodes for energy storage systems.
