His researchencompasses both fundamental and applied aspects of carbon materials andscience, with a focus on the methodologies of producing carbon materials forenergy storage and conversion, catalysis, and environment protection. He haspublished 800+ papers in peer-reviewed journals, including Nature Mater., Adv.Mater., Adv. Funct. Mater., Adv. Energy Mater., Energy Environ. Sci., PNAS,Nature Commun., ACS Nano, Angew. Chem. Int. Ed., J. Am. Chem. Soc., Joule,Matter, Chem, etc., with citations 58000+ times and h-index of 120 (googlescholar), and his work has been featured on 70 covers of internationaljournals. He has been honored with 30+prestigious awards and prizes including the First-class award for fundamentalresearch and industrialization technologies from the Education Ministry ofChina and Liaoning Province. Abstract

   Graphene, as a kind of 2D carbon material, is of greatpotential in many fields, and can be produced from different carbon-containingprecursors by various technologies. With graphene as the building structureunit, functional materials with tuned structure and properties can befabricated, of which the key is how to functionalize the graphene. By makinguse of molecule chemical methods, graphene can be finely functionalized. A newconcept, multi-dimension carbon materials engineering (MDCME),is proposed, and demonstrated with applications of the functionalized graphenein energy storage and conversion, electro-catalysis for synthesis ofvalue-added fine chemicals. The MDCME concept will be explained in terms ofmolecular science, surface and interface engineering, and the construction of multi-dimensionalmaterials with better-than-expectations performance. The prospects andchallenges of smart functional materials will be outlined with applications offunctionalized graphene in fields such as electro-chemical synthesis andseparations.
