Abstract

Cement, as one of the key construction materials, plays a very important role in the social and economic development, yet it also brings great challenge due to its large consumption in natural resource and energy and the emissions of greenhouse gases during manufacture. This issue is of great importance especially for China due to its huge volume of cement output accounting for over half of the world cement output.

An overview is given in this presentation in a global context on the challenges this world largest construction materials are facing in terms of sustainability. Latest progress in this field is also introduced in terms of industrial technological advancement, fundamental research and the combination of cement science with modern science and technology. Future solutions towards the combination of cement and nano-materials and technology are suggested in order to address the issue of cement sustainability.
