Thomas Mueller is an assistant professor in Institute of Photonics at Vienna University of Technology, Austria. He received the M.Sc. and Ph.D. degrees in Electrical Engineering from Vienna University of Technology, Austria, in 2001 and 2004, respectively. His Ph.D. work focused on terahertz spectroscopy of nanostructures. After civil service (2004-2005) he worked as a University Assistant at TU Vienna (2005-2007). In 2007, he joined the IBM Thomas J. Watson Research Center, Yorktown Heights, USA, as a postdoc where he worked on carbon-based electronics. End of 2009, he returned to Vienna, where he currently holds an Assistant Professor position.

His research focuses on photonics and electronics using graphene and other two-dimensional materials. He authored and co-authored more than 55 peer-reviewed publications in leading scientific journals. Selected awards include the START-Prize, the Fritz Kohlrausch-Prize, and the ASciNA Award.
Title:2D Materials and Heterostructures for Applications in Optoelectronics

Abstract

In this talk I will review our recent research activities on applications of two-dimensional (2D) materials and heterostructures in optoelectronics. In particular, I will present (i) a WSe2 monolayer p-n junction diode,[1] formed by electrostatic doping using a pair of split gate electrodes, and (ii) a MoS2/WSe2 van der Waals type-II heterojunction.[2] Upon optical illumination, conversion of light into electrical energy occurs in both devices. Biasing the p-n junctions in forward direction gives rise to light emission. We envision that the advantages of 2D materials, such as flexibility, high mechanical stability and low costs of production could lead to new photovoltaic solar cell and display technologies.
