Abstract

With the increase of world's population and the development of modern industry, energy and environment crisis, especially the portable water crisis have influenced the economy and people's life. However, the traditional desalination technologies, such as reverse osmosis, electro-dialysis and ion-exchange, have their own disadvantages, such as high energy and capital intensity. Capacitive deionization (CDI), as an alternative technique for desalination, is attracting more and more attentions with the development of carbon materials due to its high and adjustable efficiency, low energy consuming and environmental-friendliness. In our researches, the graphene and their composite were used to fabricate CDI electrodes and the electro-sorption performance of such kind of electrodes was investigated. Furthermore, we have developed a new prototype of CDI system for pilot scale desalination and deep purification of industrial waste water.
