Abstract

Tetrabromobisphenol A (TBBPA), as a typicalbrominated flame retardant, poses a significant threat to public health, especially due to its severe triple effects. To protect human health, it isnecessary to strengthen the monitoring and control of TBBPA and activelyexplore effective degradation techniques to reduce its environmental pollutionand potential health risks. This study aims to explore the application of acoupled system comprising nano zero-valent iron (NZVI), graphene oxide (GO),and microorganisms in the degradation of TBBPA, a halogenated organicpollutant. The research results show that NZVI/GO composite materials have alarge specific surface area and pore volume, and the hydrophilic functionalgroups on the surface of GO facilitate diffusion under neutral and alkalineconditions. Moreover, the deactivated NZVI/GO after microbial reductionexhibits a degradation efficiency of over 90% towards TBBPA. During themicrobial reduction process by Shewanella, approximately 75% of the totalFe(II) is converted to adsorbed Fe(II). Degradation product analysis revealsthat the ultimate degradation product of TBBPA is bisphenol A (BPA), and thedegradation pathway involves sequential debromination. Secondary mineralsproduced during the microbial reduction and deactivation of NZVI by Shewanellainclude magnetite and green rust, which effectively promote the reduction anddebromination of TBBPA. Therefore, by constructing a coupled system of nanozero-valent iron/graphene oxide/microorganisms, the degradation efficiency ofTBBPA can be significantly improved. This coupled system holds potential forthe treatment of halogenated organic pollutants in soils and groundwater, offering new insights and support for environmental remediation technologies.
